Mike Bloski (BLAH-SKI), BAS, Hazmat Captain, Southern Manatee Fire Rescue
Captain Mike Bloski (BLAH-SKI) has been in the fire service for 32 years, starting his career as a volunteer firefighter in Escambia County, Florida, in 1992. In 1997, he moved to the Southwest Florida area and was employed by the Southern Manatee Fire Rescue District. We are rising through the ranks, responding to thousands of incidents in our region that have included train derailments, natural disasters, and major hazmat responses. As a founding member of the Manatee County hazmat team and as part of the Operations Division, I serve on the administrative staff and am responsible for providing and managing the operational readiness, regulatory compliance, and training activities for the members of the Special Operations Team (Hazardous Materials Response). Under my direction, our department’s response team reached Type I capability requirements in 2 years. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Administration from St. Petersburg College. I am currently enrolled for my master's degree at Columbia Southern University. In addition, I have completed my Florida certification in Fire Officer IV, Fire Instructor III, Fire Inspector I, Emergency Medical Technician, Incident Safety Officer, and Hazardous Materials Technician. I am also a member of the Florida Fire Chief’s Association and have served on the Florida Association of Hazardous Materials Responders section as Secretary for the last three years, being selected as Hazmat Responder of the Year in 2023. I have been an instructor at Manatee Technical College for the last 22 years, training future firefighters in associate-level course work, fire ground operations, and hazardous materials response. In 2019, I was awarded the United States Congressional Fire and Rescue Dedication and Professionalism Award from US Senator Verne Buchannan of the 16th Florida Congressional District. I currently live in Southwest Florida with my wife and 2 daughters.
