Mike Pylar is a Captain for the Denver Fire Department, assigned to the Special Operations Division, and has been in the Department for 25 years. Before his Special Operations assignment, he had worked through the Hazardous Materials Team as an Entry Technician, a shift Lieutenant, and the Hazmat Team Captain. The Department has entrusted him as the Department's Subject Matter Expert for Hazmat and Terrorism WMD.
Mike is a Fire Department Response SME for contract support to SummitET®, Serving Sandia National Laboratories in support of the U.S. DOE NNSA, Office of Radiological Security Summit.
Mike has been appointed to the Department of Homeland Security's Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Securing the Cities Program for Denver. He has led the way for the Equipment and Training Committee to procure equipment for every fire company in the city. Mike has worked to ensure that all department officers have been trained to the Primary Screener level and the entire Hazmat Team to the Secondary Screener level. Lastly, he worked with the Executive and Operations committees to produce Denver's Concept of Operations Plan, ensuring that Denver emergency responders are prepared to respond to a radiological threat.
Over the last ten years, Mike has and continues to work for the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) as a Master Instructor for the Hazmat WMD Department. He delivers Hazardous Materials Operations and Technician courses, Emergency Response to Terrorism, and Drug-Related Incident courses to entry-level firefighters and seasoned veterans. The focus of these trainings is to ensure the safety of firefighters throughout their careers and to prepare them to serve their communities.
