This session will be a complete overview of the February 3, 2023 Norfolk Southern Train 32N derailment in East Palestine OH. The presentation focuses on the response by local, state, and federal agencies from the time of the derailment and subsequent mandatory evacuation through the vent and burn operation and lifting of the mandatory evacuation order. The time line discussion will focus on the hazardous materials response by first responders along with the establishment of Unified Command and interagency operability throughout the primary incident response over the first seven days. The presentation will wrap up with an over view of lessons learned and safety improvement recommendations to the federal agencies conducting investigations and oversight. The derailment is being classified as the largest hazardous chemical incident in the country. The presentation is given through the perspective and eyes of the incident commander for this particular incident.
