Captain Southern Platte Fire Potection District Parkville, Missouri, United States
Using a specific near miss incident, we will look at stress reactions and decision-making and how unintentional training practices can set us up to fail at critical incidents. This session will discuss concepts such as RPDM, muscle memory and tunnel vision and will present some “best practices” to building into a training program. Using examples from the fire and EMS world, specific training techniques that cause problems in performance will be identified.
Learning Objectives:
The participant will relate how a single event (near-miss) led me to question training outcomes and design.
The participant will understand the effect of stress and how the body’s reaction affects decision making (including the role of muscle memory)
The participant will recognize some unintentional ways our training can set us up to fail in emergencies
