Battery Overpacking

This workshop will help prepare HazMat technicians to properly overpack of damaged, defective, or recalled (DDR) lithium-metal or lithium-ion batteries. Topics will cover safety procedures, different types and sizes of DDR containers, CellBlock FCS, and packaging requirements in accordance with DOT special permits, and shipping batteries for recycling.

Learning Objectives:

  • Given battery cells and a battery overpack drum, students will properly package the battery cells.
  • Given a picture of a battery including the volts and amp hours, the student will calculate the watt hours to determine if the battery can safely be placed into a drum.
